Little-Known Black History Fact: Henry 'Box' BrownDate: Wednesday, February 03, 2010, 5:14 am By: Erica Taylor, The Tom Joyner Morning Show

Henry “Box” Brown was a slave in Virginia who escaped to freedom by arranging to have himself mailed to Philadelphia abolitionists in a box. After first losing his wife and children to the trade, Brown insisted on escaping. On March 29, 1849, the day of his escape, Brown burned his hand with oil to avoid working. With the help of James Smith and a local white storekeeper named Samuel Smith, Brown arranged to have himself shipped to a free state. He had saved up $166 and payed $86 to the storekeeper. The storekeeper’s contact was Philadelphia abolitionist James McKim, who agreed to receive the box. For 27 hours, Brown traveled by wagon twice, then railroad, steamboat, railroad again, ferry, a third time by railroad and finally via delivery wagon.After the box was received by the abolitionists, Brown said their first words were, “How do you do, gentleman?” He was finally free.

After his escape, Henry was knicknamed Henry “Box” Brown. He immediately wrote books and publicly spoke about his experience, which upset Frederick Douglass, who said that other slaves could’ve escaped that way if it wasn’t for Brown. Brown left his wife and children in slavery and continued on. He married again to a white British woman and started a family magic act and the Brown Family Jubilee singers. Henry 'Box' Brown’s story was used as a point-of-reference in the idea of the 1982 movie “The Toy,” starring Richard Pryor and Jackie Gleason.

Anderson University celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a city-wide celebration. People from AU met on campus and walked to the Paramount Theatre where they continued the celebration with the rest of the city.

Chicago Trip

On October 23, 2009 the Cultural Resource Center sponsored a trip to Chicago, IL. 19 students and one advisor traveled to North Park University to attend a Student Diversity Leadership Conference. The theme for this conference was, "What does it mean to understand human differences?" One of the aims of the conference was to provide a forum for students to learn how to use their knowledge & skills to be agents of change on their perspective campuses.

Along with attending the conference, we had several cultural excursions. We ate lunch in Albany Park, traveled to the Dusable museum of African-American History, & the Holocaust museum. We also experienced getting lost in Chicago and navigating through the heavy traffic.

Here is what some of the students said about our trip:

"Diversity is created for a purpose, it is not an accident. Therefore, it is essential that diversity is acknowledged by everyone." [God does not make mistakes!] - Priscilla Ahn

"The best part I liked was that diversity is god's will"

"I think that we should have some sort of presentation about how diversity is a mandate from God. I think if more people looked at diversity from that perspective, then our multicultural associations on campus may have a little more support from the student body."
